Masterclasses – Wednesday 3 September
On the morning of Wednesday, 8:30am–12:30pm, 3 September, we will run four masterclasses. All masterclasses will be held in the Marie Reay Teaching Centre at Kambri at ANU.
[M1] Working well: A trauma-informed, culturally-safe approach to managing trauma in the workplace
Presenters: Amanda Whelan, Executive Director, Innovation and Capability Building knowmore Gary Oliver, Executive Director, First Nations and Strategic Engagement, knowmore This masterclass builds on foundational training and resources knowmore has developed and successfully delivered to the community legal centre sector since 2019. It delivers a deeper dive into trauma-informed, culturally-safe approaches to better understand how the way we work, the people we serve, the unique sector we work in, our own lived experience and our wellbeing intersect. It is also a continuing reminder for leaders, staff and volunteers about the responsibilities that workplaces hold to take care of the risks of psychosocial injury. It will be delivered in three parts.- Parliamentary panel – MPs and Senators from across the political spectrum discuss priorities for the 48th parliament and how to work effectively with parliamentarians to deliver law reform.
- Tips for working with political journalists – Hear directly from a journalist who’s covered federal politics on how to get cut through for your issue in the busy press gallery and 24/7 media cycle.
- Federal advocacy workshop – Work with other sector experts to workshop a high-level advocacy/campaign plan, including federal political and media engagement on a priority sector law reform issue.

This masterclass focuses on practical frameworks and examples: covering audience analysis, finding the story in data, visualisation design, and persuasive presentation. The goal of this session is to take a principles-based approach to data communication and encourage delegates to turn readily available and relevant data into insights and action for their clients, leaders, and communities.

This masterclass will canvass the mechanics and technicalities of AI and the critical impacts on legal practice and human rights. This masterclass will consist of three parts:- A deep dive into large language models and how they use data
- AI and the Legal Profession – including regulatory, ethical, and privacy issues
