About the Network
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Network is open to all Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander women who work at organisations within the national membership of Community Legal Centres Australia. This includes at community legal centres, Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services, and peak bodies, within the Community Legal Centres Australia membership.
This network advocates for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in our sector, both employees and clients.
Advocacy and law reform
Senate inquiry into measuring outcomes for First Nations communities
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Network, along with some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men in the sector, created a submission collaboratively with secretariat support from Community Legal Centres Australia to the senate inquiry into Measuring outcomes for First Nations communities.
The submission gifts to the inquiry the voices and stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers in the community legal sector. The knowledge informing the submission ranges from subject matter expertise including cultural, academic and legal perspectives, to deep historical and contemporary first-hand personal and professional experiences of what is happening in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the continent.
Vision for Justice
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Network heavily informed the development of Community Legal Centres Australia’s Vision for Justice.
In particular, the network significantly contributed to sections on First Nations justice, on social and economic justice, and on domestic, family, and sexual violence: prevention, response and healing.
The network also heavily informed the development of Community Legal Centres Australia’s Actions for the 48th Parliament, connected to the Vision for Justice — especially
